My fourth pass (Refining):

I tweaked the tail. Just working more on the overlapping action.

This week’s assignment is all about Tailor. w00t! My first character! We have to animted him jumping at least three times with [post=56 text="Squash and Stretch"] and [post=62 text="Overlapping Action"] with the tail.
Still not sure what I’m going to do. Stay tuned.
*edit* — Here’s the plan:
Duuuuuuuuude! Do it!!! DO IT NOW!!! It’s wednesday and I don’t see any action!

OK, first off, I really dig what you’re doing here. You’re so right to have pointed out that my animation “timing” i.e. the jumps, don’t have enough contrast. Yours definitely does and it’s really “interesting.” Kudos for that.
My first critique, it’s rather more of a question, is that right after each jump, your character is still squashed but I know you’re going to fix that. My question is, “is he leading his movement with his “belly” or with the top of his head? My character tends to lead with this top. Since he elongates, it seemed reasonable that he do this. At this stage, I don’t know how you’ll tackle this, but I thought I’d bring it up.
Looking at frame 61, he squashes just as much as he does on frame 79, in fact, more even! Yet the strength or height of his jumps are totally different. I think he should squash less in 61 and more on 79. Obviously you get a little floaty on the big jump, so address that.
Finally, I like that he takes that little bounce (frame 43) on the second jump, but I miss that at the end of his BIG jump (frame 100). He seems to just lose interest and just hops along into the last 2.
I know time is an issue (I’m running into the same problem!) but I think carrying your contrast along to this last stage would be cool. Maybe lose the little hop onto the ledge to gain more time? Overall, I dig!

Really, REALLY cute! My only comments would be:
Seems like he should slide more at the end of each jump…He does it a bit after the first one but the other two seem more “sticky”. It makes him seem more like a ball with a tail than a true character who would react to the surface.
I agree with toyBunny that the last jump is just a bit too floaty.
Excellent work!

How adorable!!! I think you nailed the squash and stretch technique beautifully, and coming from me, the animating genius, that is huge!!

Very, very nice. I really like it. It’s very interesting and entertaining. It flows really well and I can definitely see “character” in it. Well done. My only tiny, little crit would be to curl the tip of the tail just a bit more at the end, say frame 118. That’s it.

Thanks bunny! I do appreciate your feedback! I’ll probably revise Tailor once I’ve had a couple days to rework that tail. Something about it doesn’t quite fit right with me anyway.
Keep on keepin on!

I have one final comment myself. On the final big jump, in previous versions you had “tailor” wiggle his butt a little before leaping. It really added to the feeling of a character and is exactly what an animal would do. I’d like to see you put that back in.
